"What is a Canadian?" is often asked. The most common response: "We are not American." We do have a harder time defining ourselves.
We are young. I, RHOnda, celebrated Canada's 100th Anniversary (1967). My great-grandparents were middle-aged when Canada was born.
We are not patriotic. We have a "laissez-faire" attitude towards one another. We're glad to live in Canada, that's for sure. But, we're not flag-waving, anthem-singing people... UNLESS there's a hockey game on, eh!! THEN we hoist the Maple Leaf!
We come from all over the World. One of the first questions frequently asked upon meeting someone is: "Where are you from?". It's quite rewarding when we, RHOTO, are able to speak a few words in their mother tongue. The individual, mosaic pieces fit beautifully together, reflecting where we all CAME from. Here, we are encouraged to celebrate/continue our customs, foods, languages,"roots". There are over 100 languages spoken in the kitchens of Montreal, alone! Sure, we root for our "Motherland" team at first. But, we ALL celebrate together when the Other Guy's country wins the Cup.
We can learn from each other and appreciate one another. This makes for an exciting and tolerant society. We are not perfect, though. We have growing pains, new situations that are s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g our accommodation attitudes.
As for RHOTO, we are "World Burgers", citizens of this planet, making our home in this beautiful country called Canada. And, THAT--in itself--is a "Canadian" idea!
Congratulations, Canada, on your 141st birthday!!

A few months back I had to try and define NZ'ers for kitnrose/AliciaJaenae. It was quite difficult but I came up with similar things - we're not a patriotic country, we're practical and have a can-do attitude, we're fairly laid back and low-key. We tend to be unassuming and anyone who gets a high opinion of themselves is usually knocked back. We're definitely bicultural but rapidly moving towards multicultural. I think our country reflects it's colonial pioneer/settler background. It's always fascinating to try and define yourself! It's much easier to say what you aren't.
